Dear Diary,
My name is Amanda and I am a journalist for New York Times. A couple of years ago, I would have never had an opportunity to work at such a job. The reason why women like me are able to work at these sorts of businesses is because of the war. Ever since the war started, men have been drafted to fight; therefore, they had to leave their jobs. Six million women entered the work force causing the percentage of women to rise up to 35 percent (Danzer et. al 591). Since women were able to take over the men’s work, it became a lot more challenging for them; however, women like me decided to continue working because it was a better pay than what we were originally making. While the men were at work, women were getting hired to do “manly” jobs such as working for a business, journalism, and more (Jeffries). This was a way of us showing to society that women can work just as hard as men can and also get things accomplished (Danzer et. al 591). Even though people thought World War II was a disaster for a lot of people, it benefited greatly to women. Women journalists, like myself, were offered new professional opportunities such as working in factories, offices, and military bases (Jeffries). People finally got used to seeing women working at places they would expect men to work at (Danzer et. al 591).
